""Having traveled to Asia and the Middle East while working for the British council, Joinson knows what it's like to be a stranger far from home. But she makes these themes her own."-Sara Wheeler, "The New York Times Book Review""At its heart, this exquisite novel celebrates the gifts that travel into far-off cultures confers: the displacements that throw into resilient relief our transcendent human connections."-"National Geographic Traveler," Book of the Month Through Frieda and Eva and their companions, Joinson explores notions of freedom, rootlessness, dislocation - any writer's reliable arsenal. illuminates her narrative with a playfulness that borders on the Gothic. Joinson also has a gift for evoking finely calibrated shifts of feeling. Joinson, who has herself traveled widely on behalf of the British council, controls her narrative with skill: this is an impressive debut, its prose as lucid and deep as a mountain lake. "The dramatic opening of Suzanne Joinson's thrilling and densely plotted first novel offers only a suggestion of the tumult to come. Advance Praise for A LADY CYCLIST'S GUIDE TO KASHGAR:

My Clarity by M. Clarke6/10/2023 She is a great storyteller and her books are especially hard to put down. This was the first book of Bujold’s that I read, but I have since read some of her science fiction as well. Lois McMaster Bujold, Paladin of Souls (2003). Told from the perspective of various members of one family over a long period as they deal with the crises of a rapidly-changing world. A gripping cli-fi (science fiction focussed on climate change) novel, set in a future Australia and England. Well, here’s the list of my 2022 favourites, with brief notes on each. Hopefully I might finish this interesting project in 2023 or 24! I’ve read 30 of the 71 books on that list so far and four of them made it onto this year’s favourite reads. Science fiction was my most-read genre, thanks to my project to read all the novels which have won the Hugo Award for best science fiction or fantasy novel. They are a mixture of fiction and non-fiction, mostly recent but sometimes not, and I highly recommend them all. Others came close, but 21 seems enough to write about. I read a lot of books in 2022! Looking at my reading app, StoryGraph, I see that I gave the top rating of 5 stars to 21 books.

Herschel and the hanukkah goblin6/10/2023 While the story itself doesn’t directly tell why Hanukkah is celebrated, it carries the theme of freedom. If you like goblins, this is the story for you!! They’re too scared of the goblins that haunt the old synagogue at the top of the hill. But when he reaches the village, Hershel discovers that the villagers aren’t celebrating Hanukkah. He is sure that bright candles, merry songs, and platters of potato latkes will be waiting for him. Tired and hungry, he is looking forward to reaching the net village. Hershel of Ostropol is walking down the road. From the dust jacket: “It is the first night of Hanukkah.

The deep enders dave reardon6/9/2023 Save up to 80 versus print by going digital with VitalSource. This blog is a bit of a window into my world and my writing. The Deep Enders: A Novel (For Young Adults) is written by Dave Reardon and published by Mango. More recently, much of my energy has been directed online, working with my super-smart wife Ann Reardon to produce HowToCookThat – one of the world’s favourite cooking shows with 2.5M subscribers and 20M viewers each month.Īlong the way, I’ve ghostwritten books for some great people, had a non-fiction leadership book published and branched into the mysterious world of Young Adult fiction for my first novel ‘The Deep Enders’. After that I worked full-time with youth and ran an organisation that, amongst other things, staged all-ages concerts with artists such as Guy Sebastian and Switchfoot. I loved meeting amazing people (most of them unsung heroes) and also got to swim with dolphins (and from sharks). I was a reporter for 10 years, covering crime, politics and crocodile attacks for major Australian and international newspapers. Hi, I’m Dave … I’m a writer, journalist, speaker, husband, proud dad & somewhere along the line I inadvertently became a YouTuber too.
