Stranger in the woods carl sams6/1/2023 “She sketched out the whole thing,” he said. He came back to Stoick with a story idea that would become “Stranger in the Woods.” Initially, the two of them were planning on composing a book on white-tailed deer, but they decided a children’s book was a better route. In the mid- to late-1990s, Sams was shooting pictures of mule deer in Alberta, Canada, when he came across a snowman that was stripped by animals. “It just went from one generation to the next,” Sams said. That same family of deer has allowed Sams and Stoick to get close enough to take pictures and video clips. Although she was skittish at their first encounter, she returned the following day and allowed Sams to feed her out of his hand. In 1982, he pulled down an apple for a white-tailed doe. Sams is quick to establish a trusting relationship with the animals he and Stoick photograph.
